Amritsar, in the Punjab, became a major carpet-weaving centre in the later nineteenth century, producing soft, decorative rugs in large numbers for the British and American markets. Amritsar carpets are known for gentle, muted colour — dusky rose, soft gold, celadon and ivory — open, all-over designs, and a relaxed elegance that makes them very easy to place.
They are frequently found in large and unusual sizes, which, together with their soft palette, makes them a designer favourite.
