Aubusson rugs are the classic French decorative carpet. Woven flat, in the tapestry technique, in the central-French town of Aubusson from the seventeenth century, they carry soft pastel colour and elegant floral, medallion and architectural designs — garlands, ribbons, acanthus scrolls and central rosettes on ivory, celadon and rose grounds.
Because they have no pile, Aubussons are light and refined, with an almost painterly quality, and they bring a formal European elegance that works in both period and pared-back modern rooms.
