Bokhara rugs are among the most instantly recognisable of all rugs: neat rows of repeating gul medallions marching across a deep red field. The name comes from the Central Asian city of Bokhara, the great market through which the rugs of the Turkoman tribes — the Tekke, Yomut, Ersari and others — were traded, so a "Bokhara" is really a Turkoman rug named for its marketplace.
Woven in lustrous wool with the finest of tribal weaves, and endlessly copied since, the true antique Bokhara is a warm, durable and classic choice that layers beautifully in traditional and eclectic rooms.
