Gabbeh rugs are the folk art of Persian weaving. Made by the Qashqai and Luri tribes of the Zagros mountains in south-west Iran, the word "gabbeh" means roughly "raw" or "natural", and that is exactly the appeal: thick, plush pile, simple bold designs, open fields and rich, undyed and vegetable-dyed colour.
Woven from memory rather than a pattern, every Gabbeh is unique, and their pared-back, almost abstract look makes them one of the most modern-feeling of all antique and vintage rugs.
