Kashan rugs are the classic Persian city carpet, the image many people picture when they think of a fine Persian rug: a central medallion, a flowing floral field and a rich palette of red and deep blue, all finely knotted. Woven in the historic central-Iranian city of Kashan, which has produced rugs since the Safavid era, they are formal, elegant and beautifully made.
The most collectible are the nineteenth-century Mohtasham workshop pieces, whose exceptional wool and fine weave set the benchmark for Persian city weaving.
