Kazak rugs are the boldest and best-loved of the Caucasian weaves. Made in the south-western Caucasus, they combine large, simple geometric medallions — often called "sunburst", "eagle" or "cloudband" Kazaks — with strong reds, deep blues and ivory, and a thick, lustrous, long-piled wool.
Their graphic, almost modern look and their glowing natural colour make them a favourite statement rug, and good antique examples are highly collectible.
Collectors recognise many named Kazak designs — Sevan (the shield medallion), Lori Pambak, Karachopf, Eagle and Star Kazaks among them — each a distinct arrangement of medallions and motifs. All share the bold scale, thick pile and strong colour.
