Peking rugs take their name from the imperial capital (today Beijing) that became the main collection and export point for northern Chinese weaving from the late nineteenth century. They are the classic traditional Chinese carpet: typically blue and ivory, with an open field, a central medallion and corner motifs, and symbolic Chinese imagery — dragons, bats for good fortune, the endless knot, peonies and cloud bands.
Their calm, uncluttered look and gentle colour make Peking rugs some of the most restful and easy to live with of all antique carpets.
