Serapi rugs are the refined, older relatives of the Heriz. Woven in the same north-west Persian district, usually before about 1900, they have a more open, spacious design, softer and more sophisticated colour, and a grandeur that designers reach for in large rooms.
"Serapi" is not a town but a quality grade — the term dealers use for the finest antique Heriz-district carpets. Genuine examples are increasingly scarce, which is reflected in their value.
