Bakshaish rugs (also spelled Bakhshayesh or Bakshayish) are the most tribal and abstract of the Heriz-region weaves, and among the most distinctive of all Persian carpets. Woven in the old village of Bakshaish, some of the earliest in the district, they are known for spacious, almost modern-looking designs, soft vegetable-dyed colour and a folk-art freedom you rarely see in more formal city rugs.
Where a Heriz is precise and a Serapi is elegant, a Bakshaish is expressive: camel-ground fields, abstract medallions, tree-of-life and animal motifs, drawn by eye rather than from a cartoon. Good antique examples are rare and highly collectible.
