Flatweave rugs are woven flat, with no knotted pile, so they are lighter, reversible and easy to layer. The kilim is the best known, but the flatweave family also includes the brocade-textured sumak, the Indian cotton dhurrie and the banded jijim. We carry antique and vintage examples from Persia, Turkey, the Caucasus, India and Morocco.
Because the pattern is woven into the structure rather than tied on, a good flatweave is hard-wearing, graphic and endlessly versatile — as happy on a wall as on the floor.
These are the main flatweave techniques. A kilim is the classic slit-woven flatweave; a sumak uses a wrapping technique for a raised, brocade-like surface; a dhurrie is the Indian cotton version; and a jijim is built from narrow woven strips sewn together.
