Kerman rugs, from the south-eastern Iranian city of the same name, are among the most elegant and painterly of all Persian carpets. Kerman weavers were famous for their sophisticated colour sense and their willingness to experiment, producing everything from formal medallion carpets to open, almost pastel decorative pieces and remarkable pictorial and "vase" designs.
The finest grade is the Lavar (Ravar) Kerman, woven in the Ravar district north of the city, prized for delicacy and superb colour.
Kermans range from soft ivory, rose and celadon to deeper reds and blues, in medallion, all-over floral, garden and pictorial designs. Their refined palettes make them a favourite for lighter, more formal interiors.
