Shirvan rugs, from the eastern Caucasus in the plains and hills of present-day Azerbaijan, are among the finest and most refined Caucasian weaves. They are thinner and more tightly woven than a Kazak, with crisp geometric fields, small repeating medallions and stylised motifs, in clear, well-balanced colour.
Prayer rugs are a Shirvan speciality, and the weave's clarity and fineness make Shirvans a favourite with collectors.
