Tabriz is the great all-rounder of fine Persian weaving. Made in the north-western city of Tabriz, one of the oldest rug-making centres in Persia, these carpets are known for precise drawing, an enormous design range and a reliable, hard-wearing construction that suits almost any room.
Because Tabriz weavers work on a cotton foundation with a tight knot, they can render everything from crisp geometric medallions to flowing florals, pictorial scenes and garden designs. The most sought-after antiques are the Haji Jalili Tabrizes of the late nineteenth century, prized for refined palettes and elegant borders.
Tabriz rugs appear in central-medallion, all-over floral, garden, pictorial and Herati designs, in palettes from soft ivory and rose to deep red and indigo. The range means there is a Tabriz for almost any interior, traditional or modern.
